ASURA 2019

We are delighted to invite you to join us at the 2019 Australasian Symposium on Ultrasound and Regional Anaesthesia (ASURA) hosted by the Anaesthesia Continuing Education Regional Anaesthesia SIG. Since the first symposium in 2008, ASURA has established itself as the principal regional anaesthesia meeting in Australasia. Following the success of the previous meeting, ASURA 2019 is returning to Noosa, QLD to combine an excellent scientific programme with the relaxed environment offered by Peppers resort.

Keynote Speakers

 ASURA 2019 has four invited keynote speakers.

  1. Associate Prof.Jens Borglum, is from Aarhus University, Denmark.
  2. Associate Prof.Dr Brummett is an Associate professor at the University of Michigan where he is the Director of Pain Research and Director of Clinical Anesthesia Research.
  3. Associate Prof. Ki Jinn Chin, is from the University of Toronto and is the Fellowship Coordinator and Regional Anesthesia Program Director at the Toronto Western Hospital.
  4. Professor Sandra L. Kopp is from the Mayo Clinic. Prof. Kopp is currently the Vice Chair, Integration and Convergence, Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine and Chair, Division of Community Anesthesia.

In addition to our invited keynotes, we are delighted to welcome an additional associate faculty, Associate professor Rebecca Johnson. Dr Johnson is a clinical researcher, and regional anesthesiologist, in the Department of Anesthesiology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester.

Together our international faculty offer a wealth of expertise in both clinical practice, research and teaching of regional anaesthesia.

Faculty members are invited to attend dinner at the Boathouse restaurant overlooking Noosa waterfront. A relaxed dining experience offering modern Australian seasonal menu for our guests to enjoy.

ASURA 2019 Conference Cruise & Dinner

Guests will embark on a cruise from the Sofitel Jetty on Saturday 23rd and take in the final moments of the sunset enjoying Noosa’s famous river whilst sipping on drinks and sample locally sourced canapes, before arriving at the Woodfire Grill restaurant for dinner. 


In order to maximise the workshop options for ASURA 2019, we are offering several alternatives for delegates on Day 1 of ASURA. For novices and less experienced delegates, there are introductory workshops on Thursday morning, in Noosa. This offers 2 modules featuring an ultrasound needle-imaging skills training session plus a scenario-based small group teaching session called All Around the Block.

For more experienced delegates, we are offering 2 cadaver workshops at the Queensland University, Brisbane. The morning session will be aimed at any anaesthetist wanting to improve their anatomical knowledge and clinical skills for RA. The afternoon session is for more experienced practitioners, and will focus on anatomy and sonoanatomy for advanced techniques.

The remainder of the ASURA delegates will be offered a choice of lectures and PBLDs at the conference venue in Peppers resort, Noosa.

Day 2 of ASURA will feature a full day of plenary sessions and day 3 will comprise of small group workshops and PBLDs. 

We will make full use of the Noosa location for our social programme activities.
